Led by coach Jeff Stutt, Birkdale Boxing Club recently competed in the Australian Club Champs in Adelaide from May 17-19. Among the boxers was Zak Martin Anneff, who returned triumphantly to the ring after a hiatus due to his acting career.

Anneff, who has 15 bouts under his belt, balanced his professional commitments with his passion for boxing.  He competed in the Elite 67kg division and showcased his skills over three days, winning three bouts to claim the overall division title.

The Australian Club Champs is one of the largest club tournaments in the country, attracting a strong field of boxers. Over 250 bouts were held over three days at the Dom Polski Centre, with two rings running side by side.

In addition to Anneff's success, Stutt cornered another New Zealand boxer, Filimaea, who faced a formidable opponent. He put an 8-count on his opponent in the third round. Filimaea fought valiantly but ultimately lost a close decision.  

Stutt highly recommends that more boxers participate in cross-Tasman tournaments. 'Stutt encourages other New Zealand clubs to attend the tournament as it is a great experience to have novice, intermediate, and open sections. The highlight was the boxers talking to one another after their bouts and how much the Aussies appreciated NZ travelling to participate. 

Stutt also got a bout in the Master's division, coming away with the Master's Boxer of the Tournament award.  Travelling away with them was a great experience. 'I enjoyed my time with the young boys. It made me feel young again'.

These tournaments are a great opportunity to gauge our level against the well-conditioned Australian competition, with our boxers facing different opponents to enhance their skills and abilities.
