Whanganui Stalwart's final bell

JAMES COMP OBITUARY

James Herbert (Jim) Comp; Aged 67 years. Beloved husband and soulmate of Lyn for 48 years. Much loved father and father-in-law of Barry and Imogen, James and Raylene, Amaria and Hayden, Wiremu, Daniel and Nicole. Loved poppa of his 16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Loved brother of his 5 sisters and 3 brothers.

Today  in Whanganui a large crowd  farewelled the much loved  Jim Comp who died suddenly  on Monday the 21st November  .  With his wife Lyn often by his side Jim was a  very well  known referee and judge who officiated for over 25 years at  many    Amateur , Corporate and Professional Tournaments . Well known in Local Rugby and Boxing  circles he was very much a doer and put his effort into any task to make an event  successful .

His no nonsense  approach to officiating  made him an   excellent boxing referee  and was much admired by boxers , coaches and  fellow officials , a regular R J at the New Zealand Boxing Championships  and North Island Golden Gloves he was a tireless worker and promotor for boxing  he  also coached at the River city gym in Whanganui helping youth  .

At today's  sendoff   many of the eulogies spoke about his love of family and  his willingness  to help where ever he could ,   his ability to  always have a laugh ,  and his many practical jokes on workmates  .

President of Boxing New Zealand Steve Hartley and River city Boxing coach Eddie Tofa  spoke  on behalf of the boxing community  .Many fellow boxing enthusiasts will remember the day  Jim was refereeing a bout at the NI Championships and was constantly being heckled by a loud obnoxious supporter , as  soon as the decision was announced Jim was out the ring and  after him hurdling the stairs   two  at a time  to give him a real heckling of his own .

As Steve Hartley said a great guy will be sorely missed by all

RIP Jim Comp
