David Nyika beaten in opening fight at AIBA World Boxing Championships

(VIA STUFF) - David Nyika has been beaten in the opening round of the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Doha.

Up against the world's fourth-ranked amateur heavyweight in Uzbekistani Rustam Tulaganov, Nyika was beaten in all three rounds and leaves the tournament much earlier than he had wanted.

That said, the 2014 Commonwealth Games light heavyweight gold medallist always knew it would be tough coming in as an unseeded boxer and expected to be up against some of the worlds best early in the competition.

David Nyika beaten at boxing world champs

(VIA 3NEWS) - New Zealand boxer David Nyika has suffered his first loss as a heavyweight to be eliminated from the world championships in Doha.

Having been handed a first-round bye, Nyika lost his second-round bout 3-0 on a unanimous decision to the world's fourth-ranked amateur, Rustam Tulaganov of Uzbekistan.

One judge awarded all three rounds to Tulaganov but the other two acknowledged Nyika won one round.

New Zealand boxer Patrick Mailata loses first bout at World Championships

(VIA STUFF) - Patrick Mailata has lost his first round matchup at the World Boxing Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Mailata is one of four New Zealand boxers at the world champs and the South Auckland super heavyweight was the first Kiwi in the ring on Thursday morning [NZ time].

He took on Brazil's Rafael Lima Duarte on day two of the event and lost 2-1.

Patrick Mailata first Kiwi boxer up at world champs

 

(VIA STUFF) - Three of the four New Zealand boxers at the World Championships in Doha have been handed first round byes.

Chad Milnes (60kg), Josh Nyika (69kg) and David Nyika (91kg) will all advance to the second round without throwing a punch in the first round action on day one of the tournament.

Patrick Mailata, in the super heavyweight division, will be the first New Zealand boxer to fight at the 2015 world championships. He will take on Brazil's Rafael Lima Duarte in the first round.

Olympic lure for NZ boxers in Doha

(VIA NZCITY) - The lure of an Olympic qualifying spot is motivating New Zealand's four-strong team at the world boxing championships in Doha.

Super heavyweight Patrick Pakuliki Mailata will be the first New Zealander in action at the world boxing championships in Doha this week.

The three other boxers in the four-strong Kiwi team all have first-round byes at the high-profile event which is a key step towards qualification for next year's Rio Olympic Games.
