AIBA Men’s World Championships – Day Two (10 September 2019)


There was good news received from day two (10 September) of the AIBA Men’s World Championships being held in Yekaterinburg, Russia - with New Zealand  Light Heavyweight Jerome Pampellone making a winning debut at the AIBA pinnacle event.

The Kiwi pugilist squared off with P Kovacs from Hungary and took the fight to his opponent from the opening bell. Pampellone received a unanimous decision, dominating the bout, with the judges’ scorecards of 30-26, 30-27, 30-26, 30-27, 30-27 reflecting the control shown by the New Zealand boxer.

A big weekend is coming up for the New Zealand boxers at the World Championships, with all three boxing in the Round of 16 contests. Middleweight Ryan Scaife who drew a first round bye, is the first in action on Saturday (14 September) against the winner of the preliminary bout between a Belarusian and Korean.

Jerome Pampellone will enter the ring for the second time on Saturday evening, against a Belgium opponent who had the luxury of drawing a bye in the preliminary contests. Heavyweight David Nyika will sit on the sideline for a further day, before making 2019 World Championships entrance against A Hagag from Hungary on Sunday afternoon.
