TWO NEW ZEALAND BOXERS TASTE SUCCESS AT AIBA MEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN RUSSIA


Two New Zealand boxers have progressed to the last stage of the preliminary contests at the AIBA Men’s World Championships being held in Yekaterinburg, Russia 7-21 September 2019 – after winning their Round of 16 bouts on day seven (15 September 2019)  of the championships.

First into action at the half way stage of world tournament, was Commonwealth Games double Gold Medallist David Nyika who faced Ahmed Hagag from Austria, after drawing a bye in the opening preliminary contests.

Nyika took the fight to his opponent from the opening bell of the Heavyweight bout and controlled the fight throughout, to earn a 5 nil decision. Two of the judges gave David a four point margin, with the other three settling on 30-27 to the New Zealand representative.

The evening session saw Light Heavyweight Jerome Pampellone, square off with Belgium’s El Mohor Ziad, after winning his opening bout. The Kiwi boxer put on a strong performance and was awarded a unanimous decision by the five ringside judges.

Earlier in the week, Jerome Pampellone had opened the New Zealand campaign at the AIBA pinnacle tournament, with a unanimous victory when he defeated a Hungarian opponent 

On day six, the third Boxing New Zealand representative in Middleweight Ryan Scaife put a solid performance, before losing 5 nil to Vitali Bandarenka from Belarus.

David Nyika and Jerome Pampellone, will sit on the sideline on day eight, before re-entering the ring the following day (Wednesday Morning NZ time) with both boxing for a place in the quarter-finals.
