Boxing New Zealand National Championships 2-5 October 2019 - Day One Review

The three elite men’s preliminary bouts on the opening evening of the 2019 Boxing New Zealand National Championships,  all failed to go the regulation distance with the referee stepping in to stop all three contests.

Wendell Stanley who is one of the favourites for the Welterweight title, defeated Bryce Raynes, after the referee stopped the contest because of injury in round three.

Trevor Swainson and Jerome Pampellone, advanced to the next round of competition in the Light Heavyweight division, with both forcing their opponents to require the referees intervention. Pampellone stopped River Royal in the second stanza of their bout with Swainson stopping Egelani Taito in round three.

Commonwealth Games Bronze Medalist Tasmyn Benny, had a good tussle with Katie Thompson in the Women’s 51kg division, before earning a majority 4-1 decision from the judges.

Day two draws see Wendell Stanley back in action in the Welterweight ranks, squaring off with Tawhiri Toheriri, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals. The other Welterweight clash could produce a barn-burner, with Dominic Roe meeting former Jameson Belt winner Harrison Scaife who is on the comeback trail.

Current Women’s 60kg champion Troy Garton, who has dropped down a weight division to the 57kg class this season, makes her entrance to the Hastings ring taking on Tegan Burdett-Clarke tonight.
