Asia-Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament – Amman Jordan 3 – 11 March 2020

Day Nine - 11 March 2020

M 91kg            (Final) David Nyika lost to Vassiliy Levit (Kazakhstan) 4-1

Kazakh Levit beats Nyika in men's heavyweight final

The penultimate bout of this tournament is the heavyweight final between Kazakhstan's Vassiliy Levit and New Zealand's David Nyika, the top two seeds.

Levit won a silver medal in Rio and a bronze at last year's World Championships. Nykia lands with a right over the top and perhaps Levit's knees slightly sagged there. Flashing left hook from Levit, Nykia, who has been over in the UK sparring with some of that country's top heavies, probably looked the sharper overall in the opening round. Yep, 4-1 Nyika.

Levit is 32 and has been mixing it at the top level of amateur boxing for over a decade. Cracking overhand right has Nyika covering up, better round from the Kazakh, he takes it 5-0.

Levit having a lot of success with his left in the final round, Nyika has gone a bit ragged. Nyika pings Levit with a big right but the Kazakh will see it out. Levit wins it via split decision.
